Since its launch a few years ago, the Apple Watch SE has been Apple's almost-good-enough entry-level smartwatch aimed squarely at the average iPhone user. It features a design similar to the Series line, but larger bezels and a smaller display, along with key health features like a heart rate monitor, resulting in a solid, all-around smartwatch package.

People don't buy new smartwatches at the same rate that they buy new smartphones. And when you really think about it, why would they? Carriers create deals as an incentive to prompt upgrades every two years (the installment plans are often set up to be two years long), but no such schedule exists for accessories. On top of that, the pace of change is often much slower because of the difficulties of miniaturizing chips and sensors to wrist-size. That's part of the reason that the Apple Watch SE 3 is so surprising.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is a great smartwatch that's almost identical to its predecessors. Sure, there are a few upgrades, including a bigger display and slightly better battery life, but if you have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 or even the original Apple Watch Ultra, there's not much reason to jump generations -- unless you're the type of person who always needs to have the latest-and-greatest gadget. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the definition of a minor upgrade, especially when you compare it to the Apple Watch SE 3 (the Apple Watch Series 11 is also a pretty small bump over the Series 10).

I’ve been reviewing smartwatches for years now, and I have specific requirements for what I consider a good smartwatch that’s part of an ecosystem. It needs to be a solid performer for fitness. It must handle notifications well by allowing me to respond from the watch with more than just canned messages (LTE or 5G connectivity is a bonus). It also needs to track my health metrics with consistency and relative accuracy. Most importantly, though, it needs to work seamlessly in tandem with my phone.

At Galaxy Unpacked earlier this month, Samsung revealed the Galaxy Watch 8 series, including the Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, and a refreshed Galaxy Watch Ultra in a new titanium blue color. One of the main features of the Galaxy Watch 8 series, besides the upgraded chipset and new designs, is that these watches come with One UI 8 Watch, Samsung's latest wearable OS based on Wear OS 6, pre-installed.
