It's been four years since we got the Beats Fit Pro, and Beats finally announced the newest generation of its fitness-focused wireless earbuds: the Powerbeats Fit. Built for a rugged workout just as much as they are for a FaceTime call, the Apple-owned audio brand loaded up the new wireless buds with returning fan-favorite features, but made them even better. The new Powerbeats Fit boast evolved durability, a new design prime for comfort, Active Noise Cancelling (ANC), up to 30 hours of battery life, and more.

Starting today, you can order Powerbeats Fit from Apple in Jet Black, Gravel Gray, Spark Orange, or Power Pink for $200.

A redesigned wingtip and durability for all types of workouts

You can easily pick out Powerbeats in a crowded gym -- they've always had an iconic earhook to mark their impressively secure fit. However, the Powerbeats Fit is the first in the Powerbeats line to lack it. Instead, the new buds sport a universal secure-fit wingtip that tucks gently into your upper ear and are just as stable as the trusty earhook. The result is comfort, even for all-day wear (and no searching between seats or workout machines for a fallen soldier during your set).

While the wingtips are one-size-fits-all, the buds come with four swappable ear tip sizes: extra-small, small, medium, and large. As someone with small ears, I appreciate this more than Beats knows.

With an IPX4 rating, the Powerbeats Fit are sweat- and water-resistant. So, let's say you're on mile 15 of your marathon, and it begins to rain -- don't fret, your jam sesh isn't over. The case is also safe, since it sports the same rating (and is 17% smaller than the previous Beats Fit Pro case).

The buds also offer up to 30 hours of battery life with the charging case, though I hope your race doesn't take that long. Each bud has up to seven hours of playback per charge, and if you're like me (who always forgets to juice up her headphones before the gym), Fast Fuel will let a short five-minute charge give your Powerbeats Fit an hour of playback time.

The Powerbeats Fit optimize audio performance

Advanced ANC, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Transparency Mode, and Adaptive EQ

The Powerbeats Fit sport custom 9.5mm acoustic drivers inside their unique shape, so the sound is balanced and exceptional whether you choose to listen to Tchaikovsky or Skrillex. They also support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, so the sound moves when you do -- which is a game-changer when it comes to movies and gaming. Maybe try these buds while you're playing A Quiet Place... on second thought, maybe don't.

If you take them beyond the gym and out into the world, you have two options: take it all in with Transparency Mode, or tune it all out with Active Noise Cancelling (ANC). With Transparency mode, you can allow ambient passthrough to hear the world as it normally is -- which is especially important for staying aware of your surroundings. If you're tuning out the world on a walk but see your friend, it's easy to switch from ANC to Transparency Mode for a quick hello. Then, back to your own little private Idaho.

I want to have high hopes for the Powerbeats Fit's ANC, but in the past, the company has left me wanting more in this department. I've always felt that what Beats usually delivers is decent, but it definitely doesn't sit among champions like Apple's own AirPods -- especially now that these buds have the AirPods Pro 3 to contend with. It's barely even fair to put them up against each other. But hey, since Beats thinks they're good enough to carry the heavyweight 'Powerbeats' name, there's a chance I may eat my words later on.

The Powerbeats Fit run on Apple's H1 chipset, which especially helps to block external noise when you're making phone calls (more on that later). Beats promises high-quality with six microphones and internal processing that effectively tones down external sound, like when you're walking through a wind tunnel or past a crowded café.

Adaptive EQ also actively works to make sure you're hearing the best possible sound, all based on your unique fit and ear seal. There are microphones inside the buds themselves that measure what you hear and adjust the audio to match.

Other important features to note

Compatibility, call quality, and chipsets

Just like their predecessors, the Powerbeats Fit feature on-device controls, so you can manage your music, toggle listening modes, and take calls without picking up your phone. Speaking of managing music, the Powerbeats Fit also can detect when your earbuds are in to automatically pause and play so you don't miss a note.

The Powerbeats Fit are compatible with both Android and Apple, despite featuring Apple's H1 chipset. The H1 chipset does admittedly offer more advantages for iOS users, especially when it comes to Find My, Audio Sharing, and more.

Overall, the Powerbeats Fit are a contestant worthy of the Powerbeats title -- in fact, these new buds are the first product in Beats' Powerbeats line to receive the title without the earhook. They have some big sneakers to fill as Beats' primary fitness-focused earbuds, but I'll know more when we get our hands on them soon for review.
