I've been an active user of Ray-Ban's Meta smartglasses for nearly a year at this point. It's been an interesting journey to see how the hands-off approach to receiving notifications, taking photos, and listening to Spotify has become a part of my routine. Though as time has gone on, it's abundantly clear that we're still in the early days of smartglasses. That said, after testing the new Meta Ray-Ban Display at a recent hands-on event, I feel like I've experienced a generational leap.

Nearly every major tech company is barreling towards creating some kind of smart glasses. But you have to look to smaller, newer companies for examples of the truly futuristic vision of heads-up displays and proactive assistants. The Brilliant Labs Frame is a good-looking, albeit developer-focused, pair of smart glasses, with early versions of the built-in display companies like Meta could ship later this year. The company's next pair of smart glasses that it's announcing today seems like they'll offer an even more refined take on the idea.

Google has announced Android XR, its new operating system built for virtual reality headsets and mixed reality glasses. The OS was developed in collaboration with Samsung and Qualcomm, opening the door for a wide range of Android XR devices to come to market. Android’s extended reality operating system will debut first on Samsung’s headset, which is code-named Project Mohan and will be available for purchase next year.

No company has achieved proper augmented reality glasses in a former the average Black Friday shopper can afford, but you can buy a pair of smart glasses that do capture some of the ways AR glasses could be useful. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses were released in 2023 and updated again in 2024 with new styles and AI-powered skills. The glasses won't do anything to alter how you see the world around you, but they do make a pretty tremendous pair of wireless headphones, act as a social-media ready action camera, and a burgeoning tool for learning about the world around you with Meta AI.

As someone who truly believes in the potential of Vision Pro, I haven't been quite convinced why I should break out my wallet and spend $3,499 on the headset. Having tested Vision Pro in the past, I can't argue that the tech itself isn't impressive. However, it still feels like the early days of the platform -- and not only for the hardware, which is a tad too bulky to wear for long periods.
