Foldable phones have been here for a while now. Samsung introduced its first book-style foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold, back in 2019, and since then a lot of companies, including Google, have hopped on board. It appears even Apple will likely join the list as soon as next year.

If you've been following my writing at all -- thank you, if you do -- you're probably aware that I've been against the iPhone Air since before it was launched. I respect and even admire the finished product on an engineering level -- but it's always felt like a phone in search of a market, rather than one built to satisfy any demand. In fact it's often believed that Apple's real goal is laying the foundations for its first foldable.

It's tough to make the actual phone functions of a smartphone sexy, for the reason you're probably thinking of -- most of us use our devices for everything but calling these days. I'll gladly browse Reddit, play games, track fitness, or put on a soundtrack for my EUC rides, but receiving a five-minute phone call feels like an intrusion from another century. The person didn't get the memo, somehow.

In one sense, it's remarkable that we're able to harness power out of small rechargeable battery packs, and that modern battery chemistry allows for the continued flourishing of mobile gadgets on the market. On the other hand, batteries are notoriously temperamental, being subject to degradation over the course of their (consumable) lifespans.

Google has officially released the latest version of its flagship mobile operating system -- Android 16 Quarterly Platform Release 2 (QPR2) -- onto compatible Pixel handsets, while also submitting its source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). When compared to Android's last major software update, which introduced a Material 3 Expressive design language overhaul, QPR2 is comparatively less flashy, though it's still filled with a smattering of smaller software tweaks and platform enhancements.
