In celebration of the upcoming Black Friday and pre-holiday season, Apple is offering a new limited-time promotional deal on its popular Apple TV streaming service in the United States. From today, November 21 through until December 1 at 8pm PT, the company is offering new and qualified returning subscribers access to the streamer for $6 per month for a total of six months.

Though Apple TV has plenty of high-profile shows like Severance, Slow Horses and most recently, Pluribus, the streaming service has almost always had an issue attracting paid subscribers. Back in 2021 (per Variety), it was revealed that over 60% of Apple TV+ subscribers were watching it without paying, either via a free trial or a promotional partnership, with the vast majority saying they would unsubscribe before their promotion ended rather then pay the (at the time) $5 subscription fee.

Apple renamed Apple TV+ to Apple TV not long ago, a decision that was buried in a press release about the movie F1, but was still received with a fair bit of fanfare. A simple name change shouldn't necessarily upset anyone, but people cared because it made the difference between the Apple TV app and Apple TV service harder to understand. Setting aside that silliness, though, I think the continued interest in public announcements of Apple's entertainment ambitions continues to exist because it always feels like there's more the company could be doing.

In case you missed it, Apple TV+ shed the plus sign and changed its name to just Apple TV. On the surface, that's a fine change, and it's always nice to simplify things when you can. The only problem with this name change is now the fact that Apple's flagship service shares its name with a streaming device and an app. There are three things in the Apple ecosystem that have the same name, and that's an unforced error in my eyes.

Just in case you thought it was too simple to differentiate between the Apple TV, a streaming box, Apple TV, a digital media marketplace, and Apple TV+, a streaming service, Apple is making it even more difficult. Quietly confirmed at the bottom of a press release announcing F1: The Movie's streaming debut December 12, is confirmation that Apple TV+ is now... also named just Apple TV.

Approaching its sixth birthday, Apple TV+ has carved out a decent niche in the streaming wars, populating its service with talented stars and attractive shows. It doesn't have the most extensive catalog, but it's also not particularly pricey relative to other streaming services. And because it's a part of a larger tech company, and not itself a major priority, Apple TV + has a little more flexibility when it comes to what they make. Its shows are very pretty, quite expensive, and mostly decent.

Over the past few years, I think it's fair to say that streaming TV shows and movies has gotten worse. Consider 2015. Back then, there were only a handful of streaming services, like Netflix and Hulu, and it was pretty easy to find what you wanted to watch, and it was relatively affordable. Fast-forward to today, and almost every entertainment company has its own streaming service, with content spread across multiple platforms, and the monthly cost has skyrocketed.
