Lossless audio support on Spotify has always seemed like a distant dream. In 2021, Spotify announced "Spotify Hi-Fi," which was supposed to add lossless audio to the popular music streaming app. Four years later, in 2025, it's nowhere to be seen. However, there are new signs of hope that lossless audio could finally be coming to Spotify sooner rather than later.

The strings (which are a line of code with text in it) read: "Lossless music, now in premium. Introducing the best sound quality on Spotify: for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz." Additionally, Messina posted an image which shows a new animation for optimizing headphones for lossless audio.

Aside from teases by Spotify's CEO that "better sound quality" is coming, this is the clearest indication yet that it could actually be on the horizon. But don't worry, that's not it for the Spotify leaks.

Lossless audio in Spotify's PC app has been found

A Redditor was able to enable lossless audio in the latest Spotify PC update

Another leak suggests even more hope that Spotify's lossless audio tier is coming soon. Reddit user Ok_improvement5956 posted images of lossless audio available on the Spotify app for PC, but only after using a .bat file (a script that runs code) to enable them. The Redditor claims they were able to get lossless audio to work for "only a maximum of three seconds before being cut off by the server."

If the images the Redditor posted are authentic (which you can see above), they provide a glimpse into how lossless audio on Spotify could actually function. Firstly, one of the images reveals that lossless audio utilizes 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC files, which can consume up to 1GB of data per hour of playback. This backs up what was posted on Threads.

Another image the Redditor posted also corresponds with the animation that was shared on Threads, which displays a tool for optimizing headphones for lossless audio. The image reads: "Instantly get clear, more natural sound from compatible headphones." There is also another image that shows a tool for checking headphone compatibility. Based on the language used in these images, it seems that lossless audio playback will only work with compatible headphones.

...if Spotify's Music Pro tier is coming later this year, it would make sense for Spotify to begin testing its lossless audio tier, which could explain why some of these assets might be buried in the Spotify app now.

It's important to note that this information is based on leaked images from Reddit, so, of course, take them with a grain of salt. However, there is reason to be optimistic. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Spotify was working on a new "Music Pro tier" that it plans to roll out later this year. The tier will reportedly cost an extra $6 a month and offer Spotify Premium members higher audio quality, AI remixing tools, and early access to concert tickets.

So if Spotify's Music Pro tier is coming later this year, it would make sense for Spotify to begin testing lossless audio, which could explain why some of these assets might be buried in the Spotify app now. It's been four long years since Spotify announced that lossless audio is coming, so hopefully the music streaming giant will finally deliver it soon.
